10 Ways to Increase Energy Naturally in the morning
I am NOT a morning person. But I can’t rely on energy shot drinks to wake me up, so I have spent years figuring out ways to increase energy naturally in the morning.
I worked 3rd shift for almost 8 years, and switching back to day shift was a total nightmare. Mornings have been a challenge ever since. Apparently, God has a great sense of humor, because he blessed me with 2 little monsters who are adamant about waking between 5:30 and 6:00 every morning.
Trust me, I have tried every trick in the book to get these boys to sleep in a bit later. I have pinned every “37 Tips & Tricks to Make Your Kids Sleep In” post that has ever appeared on Pinterest. My kids are immune.
So, in order to wake up before them (which is ESSENTIAL), I must roll out of bed by 5:00. That makes my non-morning person nerves pretty edgy. Thankfully, I have discovered some great ways to add some spark to the mornings and take off some of the edginess! Keep reading to learn my secrets to increase energy naturally in the morning!
Mornings are SO Important

If you’re not naturally a morning person, it can be tough to start the day on a positive note. I completely understand, because I about as far as possible from being one myself. Somehow, we have to conquer that.
The way we start our morning sets the tone for the whole day.
If we start late and end up rushed, the rest of our day is bound to be less productive. If we are cranky in the mornings, it puts a damper on our family’s moods as well as our own. If we start out happy and energized, it tends to go much smoother!
That’s why it is so important to rock our mornings and pave the way for a successful day. Here are 10 tips that have helped me to increase energy naturally in the morning, and improve the rest of my day:
1) Drink Something Cold
It may seem simple, but drinking a cool glass of water can make a big difference in the morning. Not only does it hydrate you, but the cold liquid fuels your brain and awakens your system. Keep a bottle of water beside your bed, and drink it as soon as you wake up.
If you can’t handle water before putting something solid in your stomach, try drinking a cold glass of milk, iced coffee, or juice. Water is the best option, but getting anything cold trickling down your pipes will get your body feeling more awake.
Treat yourself to a cute new water bottle, or this infusion bottle. Whoa! I didn’t even know those existed until a few months ago!
2) Diffuse Essential Oils
Diffuse energizing oils while you are getting ready in the morning. Some of my favorites are:
- Citrus (lemon, orange, tangerine, lime, and grapefruit)
- Eucalyptus – this one is so clean and crisp, you can’t help but to feel awake and lightened by breathing it in. This may be my overall favorite!
- Rosemary – It’s not just a great addition to lamb roast and potatoes; it also has an energizing effect.
- Mints – Peppermint and spearmint are lively scents, and their powerful essential oils can really put a zing in your step.
- Blends – You can also mix essential oils to make an energizing blend. You could mix any of the oils mentioned above, or you could try one of these:
- Equal parts frankincense, orange (or lemon), and peppermint
- Equal parts eucalyptus and spearmint (AMAZING!!!)
It’s not just a bunch of hype. Essential oils really do affect our senses and health, so give them a try!
3) Use Maca Powder
This stuff is amazing. Use it on a daily basis in shakes, baking mixes, or on your toast (with some peanut butter or Nutella!), and you should notice an increase in your energy and mood within a few days.
You only have to use a small amount. If you have not used it before, start by taking 1 teaspoon per day. The average suggested daily amount is 1 tablespoon. Just be sure to run it by your doctor first, especially if you have heart disease.
It has a sightly bitter and nutty taste, and tends to clump, so don’t just throw it in your coffee! Blend it in a shake, mix it with a bowl of yogurt or a baking mix, or sprinkle it on your toast with something to balance the flavor.
Maca also has plenty of other health benefits, so it certainly won’t hurt to try it. Don’t be surprised if you notice a boost in libido, an ease of menopause symptoms, or a sharper memory after you begin using it. Added bonuses, right?
4) Take a Shower
If you are a stay-at-home or work-from-home mom, you know what I’m talking about! Don’t wait until nap time…shower as soon as you wake up! This helps to get your blood flowing, and refreshes you.
You can even run a diffuser with some energizing essential oils during your shower, to get the full effect. If you don’t want to deal with the oils, try this amazing body wash made with invigorating scents and tell me you don’t absolutely love it!
However you do it, just make sure you take a shower within a few minutes of getting out of bed…which leads us to #5…
5) GET UP BEFORE YOUR KIDS!!!!
I cannot stress this enough. There is a night and day difference from the days where I wake up before my kids and the days where they wake up before me.
As hard as it may be to drag yourself out of bed in the morning, the rest of your day will be much less stressful if you started on a good note. It is essential to take about half an hour to get yourself showered and ready, and spend a few moments alone in peace before your kids come bounding down the hallway (or start screaming from their cribs!).
If you don’t try any of the other suggestions here, at least do this one! If this seems impossible to you, check out Make Over Your Mornings. It was a game-changer for me!
6) Do a Quick Jump Session
I know you don’t have time for a full workout in the mornings (if you do, I will envy you), but you need to get your blood pumping! You can this quick routine in about 3 minutes or less before you jump in the shower:
- Do 20 jumping jacks
- While standing, bend down and touch your toes. Then stretch your arms as high as you can (this stretch is perfect for mornings! You know how a good stretch feels!). Repeat until you have finished 20 rounds
- Do 20 more jumping jacks.
Boom. You’re done. Do you not feel more awake and alive now? If that didn’t do it, maybe you should go back to sleep!
7) Move Your Alarm Clock
How many of you have an alarm clock sitting on your night stand? That’s so convenient – you can reach right over and smack it to shut it up! Resist the temptation! Move your alarm clock to the other side of the room if you can.
That way, you have to get out of bed to turn it off, which makes it less tempting to hit snooze and sleep longer. Plus, the short walk will get your blood pumping faster.
8) Make it a Game
It may sounds silly, but why not motivate yourself with a game? Start a reward jar, and place a reward (such as a quarter or a dollar, depending on your budget) in it each time you get up with the first alarm. At the end of the month, reward yourself by buying a treat with your reward money.
Often a challenge is enough to help you start a new habit. Try a simple game like this and see if the motivation doesn’t help to get you going in the morning.
9) Drink Tangerine Tea
This should come sometime after that cool glass of refreshing water, unless you’re going to pour the tea over ice. Yogi makes an amazing tangerine tea called Positive Energy. Refreshing and sweet, it can be enjoyed either hot or cold. It contains organic mate, and is perfect for a boost in mood and energy.
10) Play Some Happy Tunes
No, you don’t have to crank the speakers and wake your household. Even listening to some upbeat music quietly can help to put you in a better mood and energize your morning. Choose some fast-paced, springy songs and create a morning playlist on your iPod or smartphone, or just pop in a dance party CD.
This is NOT the time to play your spa music! Turn on Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up or Jefferson Starship’s Make Me Lose Control, and you won’t be able to go back to sleep. Your mood should definitely perk up too!
