How to Start a Blog Step By Step
If you’re anything like me, you need to have things spelled out precisely, without any gaps left. Before I decided to start a blog, I was clueless about hosting, themes, and plugins. (Do those words make your head hurt? You’re in the right place!) I had to search all over the place just to get the meaning of these terms, before I finally decided to take the leap. Lucky for you, I’m going to show you how to start a blog step by step, so you don’t need to have any tech knowledge!
Starting a blog is super simple
If you’re ready to start a blog, let’s not waste any time. Go grab a hot cup of coffee and a credit card (to process your SiteGround payment!), and get comfortable. The process only takes about 10-15 minutes, but you will probably stick around longer to play with your new website, once you see how cool it is!
Got your coffee? Okay, let’s get started! You don’t want to miss out on the 60% off discount!
Step 1: Choose your plan
I’m not going to go into major detail and try to convince you that SiteGround is the greatest, but here’s the short version: THE SERVICE ROCKS! It’s great for people like me, who were completely clueless starting out, because they have 24/7 live chat available. They are also the safest and fastest, but the service is what really sells it. So go ahead and open up siteground.com and click the “SIGN UP” button, and I’ll walk you through it.
There are 3 different plans, depending on what you need. For starting a brand new blog on a budget, you can just pick the StartUp option. Personally, I use the GrowBig plan now, but that’s not necessary at first. Either way, by using my link, you will get 60% off the regular price! Yay!
Step 2: Choose your domain
After you click “order now,” you will enter your website name. If the “.com” is not available, I strongly suggest that you come up with a different name. But you shouldn’t have that problem, because you’re super creative, and likely already came up with a completely original name. 🙂
There is a little box checked for domain registration – yes, this is a must. It’s basically the plot of land that you’re building your website on. It’s a one time thing. Once you purchase your domain (your website address), it’s yours. Type in your website name in the big empty box, and click “PROCEED.”
Step 3: Fill out your info and pay
Use your main email address, so SiteGround can contact you with any important information about your account. And make sure you choose a password that hackers won’t easily figure out. 😉
The next section is your personal info, and that’s pretty self explanatory.
Fill out the payment information.
In the next section, you can choose the billing period. It defaults to 12 months at the 60% off price with my extra special link, and that is the best option for you to start with. The extra services will automatically be checked, because they are recommended, but you can opt out if you wish. It’s less that $32/year to protect your personal info and your website, so it’s worth it.
Are you ready?? Eek!! Go ahead and click “pay now,” and the website is yours!
WOOHOO!!!!! Congrats on creating your first website!
Bonus! Installing WordPress
Now, let’s install WordPress – this is how you write the info into your website. There are 2 easy ways to do this:
1.You can click the “live chat” button, and ask a SiteGround representative to set it up for you. When the chat box appears, just say something like, “Hello! I just purchased my domain, and would love for you to install WordPress for me!” They will do the work and send you your login details.
2.You can install WordPress yourself. Click on the My Accounts tab, and tap the red button to go to your cPanel.
Once inside the cPanel, just look for the WordPress icon and click on it.
Next, go to the Install tab.
Now, just fill in the blanks. “Https://” is what you want to select for “Choose Protocol.” Then choose your website address from the drop down menu for “Choose Domain.” Ignore the Directory blank. Fill in your Site Settings with your website name and a tagline for the description. Easy peasy.
You’re almost done! You can choose a theme here, but it’s best to just wait and do it inside WordPress, so you can leave this as “none” for now. Click Install!
Boom! You’re done!
Now, you can login to your WordPress site and get started. Type in the username and password that you just created (or that you got from the SiteGround rep), and log in.
For the overachiever: First steps in WordPress
Once inside your WordPress account, you can choose a theme and start to add content. Did you realize it would be that easy to start a blog?!
Here’s a little bonus to get you started with your content. Once you login to WordPress, the dashboard will appear. This is where you will write new posts, add pages, install plugins and themes, and make all of the changes to your blog. The four main tabs you’ll use right away are Posts, Pages, Appearance, and Plugins.
Choosing a theme
The first thing you’ll want to do is choose a simple theme, so you can start adding content. Hover over Appearance, and choose the Themes option.
There are tons of themes to choose from. You can tap the Featured tab (or one of the others), or type in a keyword or theme name to search for. “Feminine,” “simple,” and “blog” are some good general keywords.
You can then hover over one that you like, and see the details or install it.
Once installed, click the Activate button.
Now you will see a Customize button. Click it, and you can begin personalizing your blog.
The next screen will look something like this, but it won’t have your information on it yet.. The Site Identity tab (on the left) is where you insert your blog name and tagline. Go ahead and type it in, so you’ve got the first step done. As you type, your name and tagline will appear on the right side of the screen.
There you go! That’s the first step to customizing your new blog. You can click through the other tabs and see what options the theme has. Most themes offer a pro version with more customization, but a free theme is a good place to start.
If you got this far and still didn’t decide to start a blog, hop on over to this post to learn why you need to stop procrastinating and start a blog today!
